Italian Frescoes: The Baroque Era, 1600-1800 presents the
Italian Baroque period in its full grandeur, from the arrival in
Rome of the style of Annibale Carracci and his pupils through the
end of the eighteenth century, when after the long predominance of
Baroque forms and expressions the pendulum swung back, bringing a
brief revival of High Renaissance style. Supplementing Dr. Steffi
Roettgen's text are 420 full-color images and 71 black-and-white
illustrations and building plans. Of the twenty-two fresco cycles
featured, two-thirds are from the secular sphere and the rest from
sacred places, contradicting the common notion that Baroque
monumental painting is found mainly in cathedrals and other sites
of worship.The volume opens with an illustrated introduction
outlining the principles of Baroque wall and ceiling painting. An
essay introduces each fresco cycle and is followed by a portfolio
of full- and double-page color plates, many of them newly
photographed.

作者介绍：
Steffi Roettgen studied at the universities of Munich,
Erlangen, and Bonn and has taught at the Technical University of
Berlin and the University of Munich. Currently she is associated
with the Art History Institute in Florence. She is the author of
Italian Frescoes: The Early Renaissance and Italian Frescoes: The
Flowering of the Renaissance.

Following the success of the previous volumes in this extraordinary Italian Frescoes series--The Age of Giotto; The Early Renaissance; The Flowering of the Renaissance; and The High Renaissance and Mannerism--This new publication features twenty-five fresco cycles, each representing a notable achievement in the history of art. The fresco cycles presented include brilliant works by Domenichino, Sebastiano Ricci, Guercino, and Tiepolo--all of them still visible on walls and ceilings of palaces and churches spanning Italy from Venice to Naples.
The authors present such celebrated sites as the Barberini Palace in Rome and the Pitti Palace in Florence, as well as lesser-known gems. Each of the chapters is concise and authoritative, offering a descriptive and interpretive essay on all aspects of the fresco cycle, covering the artists and their patrons in the context of their cultural and political history. Each essay concludes with a diagram of the site, followed by a series of full- and double-page color plates showing the entire cycle, many reproduced from new photographs of recently restored frescoes.
