Van Gogh was proud of the fact that he deliberately painted his portrait in a hurry:"One must strike while the iron is hot," he wrote, and compared his style to the quick gesture of the caricaturist, above all Honoré Daumier.
Vincent remarked: I attempted to convey the idea that the café is a place where one can ruin oneself, become crazy or criminal.
