故事发生在三十年前的纽约。
米兰达和妈妈住在一栋老旧的公寓里，妈妈在一家律师事务所做助理，事务所的律师理查德是她的男友。米兰达12岁，她有自己喜欢的书、青梅竹马的邻居，有着同龄孩子的茫然，也有自成一体的看待世界的眼光。一九七九年四月初的一天，米兰达的妈妈收到了参加热门有奖节目“20000美元金字塔”的邀请信，终于**会一偿夙愿，家人也可借此开启新生活——妈妈继续深造，理查德搬进公寓，米兰达则告别稚气的童年，迈入更加坦然、细腻、丰富的少女时期。
此时，却有一件大大的心事困扰着米兰达，她从床底下抽出盒子，里面的几张字条她已经不知看了多少遍，字条来自未来，要她讲一个故事，那个故事米兰达不愿回忆，却永难忘记。

丽贝卡·斯戴德以一种淡淡的，带着些许冷清、些许怀旧的文字呈现出完整的故事，除了一些主要人物，我们看不到很浓的人情气息——空旷的街道，寂寞的公寓，连学校都给人安静疏离的感觉。但是每当对话或独白出现，时间就仿佛慢了下来，同样写得淡淡的对话和独白，却越读越觉得恳切、有滋味，仿佛旧照片上温暖散开的黄晕，拉着我们的手渐渐融进米兰达的生活，读者即使有满心的疑惑，也可以按着性子读下去，回到三十年前的纽约，看看到底是什么秘密让小姑娘如此左右为难、欲语还休。
随着情节或推进或倒退，作者将一张张神秘字条不急不徐地摆上来，真相像洋葱般被层层剥开，泛起的辛辣味在*后时刻凝聚成重重一击，让读者忍不住鼻子发酸。而与此同时，前因后果又宛如卷心菜的叶子，在寻找真相的过程中，一小片一小片合拢，*终团成完美的球形。也许前面读着罗嗦的地方正是关键所在，看书囫囵的读者，就会错过这会儿的美妙了。

When she receives a series of enigmatic notes that claim to want to save her life, she comes to believe that they are from someone who knows the future. Miranda spends considerable time observing a raving vagrant who her mother calls the laughing man and trying to find the connection between the notes and her everyday life. Discerning readers will realize the ties between Miranda's mystery and L'Engle's plot, but will enjoy hints of fantasy and de*ions of middle school dynamics. Stead's novel is as much about character as story. Miranda's voice rings true with its faltering attempts at maturity and observation. The story builds slowly, emerging naturally from a sturdy premise. As Miranda reminisces, the time sequencing is somewhat challenging, but in an intriguing way. The setting is consistently strong. The stores and even the streets–in Miranda's neighborhood act as physical entities and impact the plot in tangible ways. This unusual, thought-provoking mystery will appeal to several types of readers.
