We can now begin to grasp why the self-portrait is so crucial in Schiele's oeuvre. Every essential facet of human life can be expressed in a self-portrait and death. It is a concave mirror in which experience of the world and the self is concentrated in one image. Viewed like this, the self-portrait in Schiele is a palpable realisation of what Paul Hatvani wrote in his 1917 Essay on Expres-sionism: "The Expressionist work of art is not only connected but indeed identical with the artists' awareness. Julian Schnabel makes art out of life, finding his materials in the fabric of the everyday. He uses broken plates as an improbable picture ground; he paints on velvet, market stall covers, army tarps, kabuki theater backdrops, and boing ring floors, finding surfaces that lend their own rich history to the painter’s eploration.
